repetition

<![CDATA[The “morning person” part of my brain never lets me sleep too long - it was up and out of the house each morning of this long weekend, onto a tram or a train or a bus, and off to some other part of town while everything was still peaceful. I took photos with numerous devices, and would've walked over 25km in total.

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/54286117221/in/dateposted/" title="one thing leads to another"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/5428611722179b517b5fbz.jpg" width="640" height="425" alt="one thing leads to another"//ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

One morning, I spotted somebody's Christmas remnants and heard Fleetwood Mac leaking out of a popular cafe before resting in a park while a pair of masked lapwings patrolled the grass near me. Another morning, a wafting smell of food grabbed me as I crossed a railway bridge, and just nearby, a friendly cat talked to me from somebody's garden. The cat had so much to tell me, in fact, that it jumped the fence into a neighbouring garden to continue meowing to me as I walked away.

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/54289091817/in/dateposted/" title="Untitled"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/542890918179173301c97z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="Untitled"//ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

The streets remained quiet, though, for which I'm grateful. My restless mind craves a chance to breathe, to listen, to explore without the stress of a crowd. Sometimes, I'm revisiting memories; Sometimes I'm thinking about conversations I need to have, and it's all part of a never-ending battle to Remain Present. Music helps, and often it's the soundscapes that really help.

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/54290020728/in/dateposted/" title="Untitled"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54290020728de2291cb7fz.jpg" width="640" height="640" alt="Untitled"//ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/54285233507/in/dateposted/" title="my continued existence, etc"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54285233507c8a278ea3f_z.jpg" width="640" height="640" alt="my continued existence, etc"//ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

#walks #photography #weekends #wandering #restlessness #music #ambient

hr

p class="sig"This was a post from a href="https://andrew.j.cosgriff.name/"Cos/a./p

p class="sig"You can follow this blog on the Fediverse at code@cos@apintandaparma.club/code or a href="https://apintandaparma.club/cos/feed"subscribe in your RSS reader/a./p

]]>

September Report

<![CDATA[I’ve been on leave for three weeks and while I’d made a list of things to get done, I was careful not to let it dominate my break. Age has brought the benefit of feeling that I don’t need to make myself so busy, that it’s ok to do nothing sometimes.

!--more--

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/50339695131/in/dateposted/" title="L1002566"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50339695131783757bbf0z.jpg" width="640" height="428" alt="L1002566"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

I continued to meditate and exercise every day at home (but more on that elsewhere). I walked a bit, in accordance with our current lockdown rules. Having lived in this area - as a non-driver - as long as I have though, I’m already intimately familiar with every street within walking distance of my home. That’s ok, because there’s still plenty to look out for - cats in windows, interesting plants, strange cars, or other previously unnoticed details of a house. Sometimes a house is suddenly, completely gone. It’s harder to find interesting things to noice about newer contructions, though I suppose they’ll find a way to seem “quaint” in a few decades’ time. I at least managed to make myself use one of my other cameras while I walked - the eternal struggle of not just using the iPhone is real.

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/50362430987/in/dateposted/" title="L1002612"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/5036243098720e4afe971z.jpg" width="640" height="428" alt="L1002612"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

One of the things I thought I’d do was to catch up on a backlog of technical work for various home systems and/or projects, but I found myself wanting to avoid the room I work from - I’m on holiday, after all, and spending hours at the same desk I’d be at during work time felt…unnecessary. Instead, I read a few books, listened to a lot of music, watched a few old movies, took far too many photos of the cats and did some gardening.

There’s plenty of other things I should have done, mostly around contacting friends or home improvements but it’s no secret that, as with many of us right now, I’m tired, and so just having some personal space feels like the best thing I could do for myself.

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/50369882057/in/dateposted/" title="suburban diagonals"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/503698820579b530c037ez.jpg" width="640" height="428" alt="suburban diagonals"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

What was the best part?

I’ve been on leave for three weeks and while I’d made a list of things to get done, I was careful not to let it dominate my break. Age has brought the benefit of feeling that I don’t need to make myself so busy, that it’s ok to do nothing sometimes.

I continued to meditate and exercise every day at home (but more on that elsewhere). I walked a bit, in accordance with our current lockdown rules. Having lived in this area – as a non-driver – as long as I have though, I’m already intimately familiar with every street within walking distance of my home. That’s ok, because there’s still plenty to look out for – cats in windows, interesting plants, strange cars, or other previously unnoticed details of a house. Sometimes a house is suddenly, completely gone. It’s harder to find interesting things to noice about newer contructions, though I suppose they’ll find a way to seem “quaint” in a few decades’ time. I at least managed to make myself use one of my other cameras while I walked – the eternal struggle of not just using the iPhone is real.

One of the things I thought I’d do was to catch up on a backlog of technical work for various home systems and/or projects, but I found myself wanting to avoid the room I work from – I’m on holiday, after all, and spending hours at the same desk I’d be at during work time felt…unnecessary.

What was the best part? All of those nothing, in-betweeny moments. Noticing the sunlight on our sleeping cats, feeling the sun on my face in the back garden, and sitting alone in a room with nothing in particular to do.
