The entryway hasn't changed – from 2005:

One strong memory is from when I bought my very first brand new film camera, in 2008 – a Bessa R4A with a 28mm lens – and my first photos with it were taken there after running into a couple of Flickr friends:

I since took other cameras there (2010):

But also took other lovely portraits outside other, nearby cafés – this one on Smith St in 2013:

Droughts and Mirages

<![CDATA[When the pandemic hit and we were stuck with just being able to walk in an N-km radius from home, I assumed it’d all be fine because I’d still be able to pursue my #FilmPhotography and find plenty of things to take photos of. Somehow, though, it didn’t work out like that.

!--more--

My lovely collection of film cameras, no matter how often I dipped into them to try a different one on each short trip, spent their time at the bottom of my bag while I walked and moped and struggled to find beauty in the everyday. When I did find a shot, my phone was just too convenient to avoid. Even when I recently travelled overseas - at last! - hoping for some inspiration in other places, the film shots didn’t come back looking that great, especially compared to the phone ones.

It feels like I’ve finally had a breakthrough, though, with a bunch of “keepers” from my first roll of JapanCameraHunter Streetpan 400. It’s enough to make me love black & white film again:

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/52515191391/in/dateposted/" title="B983134-R1-22-23.jpg"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52515191391d8a95c4ed6z.jpg" width="640" height="429" alt="B983134-R1-22-23.jpg"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/52515191881/in/dateposted/" title="that guy"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/5251519188177f0291d87z.jpg" width="640" height="429" alt="that guy"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/52515461304/in/dateposted/" title="B983134-R1-20-21.jpg"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/525154613040a49ebf39dz.jpg" width="640" height="429" alt="B983134-R1-20-21.jpg"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

Wandering back in my archives, though, tells a slightly different story - there’s been a few more (film) winners in the last two years than I remembered, both from my much-loved Leica M6:

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/51883430784/in/dateposted/" title="Lake Tyrrell, last week."img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/5188343078412f7bbf0a3n.jpg" width="320" height="215" alt="Lake Tyrrell, last week."/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/51821645468/in/dateposted/" title="confusatron"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51821645468587777af92n.jpg" width="320" height="215" alt="confusatron"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

...and the medium format point-and-shoot Fuji GA645i that still occasionally surprises me after a decade:

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/51008118781/in/dateposted/" title="seeing stars"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51008118781900c5deb8en.jpg" width="320" height="234" alt="seeing stars"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

a data-flickr-embed="true" data-header="true" data-footer="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/lonelyradio/51821880079/in/dateposted/" title="a tiny moment of calm"img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51821880079cfac6d6504n.jpg" width="241" height="320" alt="a tiny moment of calm"/ascript async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"/script

But this is why I should be spending more time with my archives - it’s a great way to remind myself of what I have done, and helps challenge the devil on my shoulder that keeps telling me “meh.
